As part of the UK Border Agency's wider Simplification project to radically simplify immigration law, the Draft Immigration Bill was published in November 2009 (PDF).
A command paper 'Simplifying Immigration Law' was published alongside the draft Bill. This explains the approach that has been taken and the further work that will be done (PDF).
Whilst the Bill will not pass through Parliament during this session, the Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR) called for submissions on the part of the Bill relating to asylum support. JCWI responded to the JCHR's request and prepared a briefing outlining our concerns about the implications of some of the provisions and their inconsistency with international and human rights law. We also prepared a supplementary analysis of the Draft Bill which we forwarded to the JCHR and the Bill team at the UKBA.
