Asylum claims fall to
lowest level for 16 years, says UNHCR
The number of asylum seekers coming to the industrialised world
fell 22 percent last year to its lowest level since 1988, according
to the annual figures published by UNHCR on Tuesday. Many individual
countries also saw their lowest totals for many years. However,
the ten new EU states saw a slight increase in asylum applications.
