Course content

This half-day course focuses on the support that is currently available to asylum seekers from both the UK Border Agency and local authorities. The entitlement to benefits by various categories of immigrants is also examined.

The course is suitable for all those advising asylum seekers and others including statutory service-providers and legal advisers.

  • Home Office procedures and policy governing assessment & eligibility
  • challenges under human rights law
  • rights of asylum seekers and those making fresh claims to claim various benefits and asylum support

Objectives

At the end of the course participants will:

  • have an understanding of the UK Border Agency arrangements including
    - eligibility for support
    - assessment procedures
    - challenging unfavourable decisions
  • have an awareness of the continuing role of local authorities
