Mavelyn is a barrister at Haris Ali Solicitors. She specializes in asylum, immigration and human rights law, and road traffic, with 25 years' experience in these areas. She is a former Legal Officer at the Refugee Legal Centre, and former Head of Immigration at Antons Solicitors. She regularly trains caseworkers and solicitors in her specialist areas, and has also taught Immigration Law as part of the Legal Practice Course for solicitors, and taught undergraduates. She was counsel, in the Court of Appeal,  on JD (Congo) v. Secretary of State for the Home Department [2012] which concerned the ‘second appeals test’; and MI & Anor v  Secretary of State for the Home Department [2014] which concerned the meaning of ‘persecution’. Also successful counsel for Appellant  (IM) in Country Guidance case of: IM and AI (Risks - membership of Beja Tribe, Beja Congress and JEM : Sudan) (CG) [2016] UKUT 188 (IAC)
