Civitas has today released a report that makes clear that current Government immigration policy is based on fantasies. It exposes the flaws in Theresa May's 'Hostile Environment' policy and highlights the desirability of working to regularise those in the UK without regular legal status.
One of the authors of the report is the ex-head of Immigration Enforcement in the Home Office.
Saira Grant, JCWI's Chief Executive, said:
“We welcome the suggestions in this report that the ‘hostile environment’ for migrants cannot work and that we should consider providing regular legal status and permission to work for irregular migrants.
Our work with undocumented migrants shows that the majority of migrants without status in the UK find themselves in this position through no fault of their own. Year on year the Government makes the rules ever more confusing, increasing fees to dizzying levels, reducing access to legal advice and removing scrutiny from their own poor decision making. As a result, men, women and children fall through the gaps and are trapped in the informal economy, at the mercy of unscrupulous employers and landlords and unable to access basic services, such as healthcare and housing. We must put a stop to this, and build a fairer and truly sustainable system.”
